Türkiye's growing partnership with Nigeria
Nigeria is the primary entry market for Turkish modular building manufacturers into West Africa. Turkish trade volume with African countries reached USD 34.5 billion in 2021 (up from USD 5.4 billion in 2003), and Nigeria's population and infrastructure demand make it the largest single destination. Turkish modular peer Karmod alone reports projects delivered to 25+ Nigerian states across healthcare, education, military and mass housing.
The rationale is demand-side. Nigeria has an acute shortage of healthcare infrastructure, educational facilities and affordable housing. Federal, state and private procurement agencies are increasingly specifying modular construction to meet delivery timelines that traditional construction cannot match. Ministry of Health tenders for primary health centre rollouts, state-level school building programmes, and oil & gas camp renewals all represent active demand streams.
Modular buildings Nigeria applications include primary health centres and clinics for federal and state ministries of health, classroom buildings and dormitories for state education boards and UBEC programmes, defence and security accommodation for the Nigerian Armed Forces and NSCDC, and oil & gas camps for IOCs and indigenous operators in Port Harcourt, Warri and the Eastern Delta.
SONCAP compliance for Nigerian shipments
All regulated product imports into Nigeria require certification under the SON Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP), administered by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. Construction and building materials are regulated products under SONCAP, and the programme applies to every commercial consignment entering Nigerian ports.
The process has two components: a Product Certificate (PC) which certifies that a specific product line meets Nigerian technical standards, and a SONCAP Certificate (SC) which is issued per shipment and accompanies the consignment to the port of entry (Lagos, Tin Can, Port Harcourt, Onne or Calabar). The SC is required to open the Form M — the import declaration that enables the Nigerian customs clearance process to begin.
structmod works with SON-authorised certification bodies including Cotecna and Intertek to issue Product Certificates and SONCAP Certificates pre-shipment. We coordinate with the importer of record to ensure the Form M is opened in the correct sequence and the goods clear customs without port demurrage charges.

Frequently asked questions
Is SONCAP included in the structmod quote?
Yes. Product Certificate and SONCAP Certificate issuance costs are included as standard line items in every Nigerian quotation. We work with Cotecna, Intertek and other SON-authorised certification bodies, with the PC prepared at the design stage and SCs generated per shipment.
How long does sea freight from Türkiye to Lagos take?
Typical transit time from Turkish Mediterranean ports (Mersin, İskenderun) to Lagos, Tin Can or Port Harcourt is 12 to 18 days depending on routing via the Suez or Cape of Good Hope. For urgent projects we can sometimes route through Beirut or Misrata for faster throughput, but direct sea freight is normally the most economical option.
Can you deliver to Port Harcourt for oil & gas projects?
Yes. Onne Port and Port Harcourt are the standard destinations for our Niger Delta oil & gas clients. We coordinate clearance with the oil-service logistics contractor and arrange final mile delivery by road to the operating location. Dust-sealed envelopes and anti-corrosion specifications are standard for humid, coastal sites.
Which Nigerian compliance bodies are relevant for modular hospitals?
SONCAP covers the base building and most construction materials. For healthcare modules that include medical equipment, NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) approval may be required for imaging and diagnostic devices. We structure the supply agreement so equipment within the scope is either NAFDAC pre-approved or supplied by a local partner who handles NAFDAC clearance.
